Have you tried making your own slime? Slime is a sensory activity we like because it gives kids the sensory experience – without getting their hands sticky or dirty. We used slime as a 4th of July activity – and made red, white, and blue slime!
How to Make Slime
(affiliate links used below)
- 4 ounce container white Elmer’s School Glue (1 bottle per color of slime)
- 4 tablespoons Liquid Starch per color of slime
- Food coloring (we used 2 drops of red and blue)
- Glitter (we used about 1 tablespoon each of red, white, and blue glitter)
Shake the liquid starch first (with the cap on!) because it can settle. Then, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. We start out by stirring it, and then eventually move to mixing it with our hands. It’s going to seem very stringy and gross at first – just keep stirring. It usually takes 3-4 minutes of stirring and kneading the slime for us before it comes together.
You’ll know the slime is ready to play with when it all comes together as one piece, and it’s no longer stringy or sticky. Then play with it. It’s fun to stretch out, or let it run between your fingers. My kids love making slime snakes!
You don’t need to add the glitter. We just liked the extra sparkle – it reminded us of fireworks for the 4th of July! This is not a slime for kids who are still putting things in their mouths. If you do use glitter, some of it will come off on your hands while you’re playing with this slime. And you’d want to wash your hands afterwards anyway – liquid starch and glue definitely aren’t edible!
Once you start playing with the red, white, and blue slime, it will become pink slime -but it will still have that red, white, and blue sparkle!
