I threw this bin together on a day when my toddler was at loose ends and I needed a quick activity. It took just a minute or two to set up, and it kept him happily playing for about an hour, pretending with his cars and construction trucks.
Making Your Bin
- A bin or a box your child can comfortably reach into
- Duct tape for road (optional: yellow tape for lines)
- toy vehicles
- dried tea leaves (or you could use coffee grounds or dirt)
- Anything else you want to add to the construction site- rocks, dried shells
Make a road across the bottom of the bin using the duct tape. Cut yellow tape to make the road lines. If you want to add an intersection or additional roads, go for it! I didn’t because our bin was fairly small – and because I was in a hurry. One road worked just fine!
Add the dried tea leaves (I saved ours from many cups of tea!). I set the tea grounds up initially in 2 of the corners, so there could be 2 stops for the construction trucks. Then put in the trucks. I used a dump truck and a bulldozer, and then added some cars.
My toddler ran right over to the bin and started playing! When he was done, I just put the lid back on, and it’s lasted for several more rounds of pretend play!
