This word activity is a way to play with Halloween words. So many of the Halloween stories we read use rhyming words. I took a few word families I thought my son would like and recognize, and added some fun Halloween fonts!

There are four word families, and the kids use a different color crayon to circle each word family.
Playing with word families helps emerging readers. It works to build phonemic awareness. This activity reinforces that words that sound alike at the end are going to look a like at the end. It also shows emerging readers that when they are trying to figure out a new word, they can look for chunks of a word (like “-at”) that they know.
