I have exciting news: we will be participating in the year-long Virtual Book Club for Kids along with many other great kid blogs. And our author for September is Lois Ehlert, one of our favorites!
One of my favorite aspects of a Lois Elhert book is her unique illustrations. In many of her books, the pages themselves become parts of the story:
In My World opens with a die cut child’s hand, and explores the shapes of a child’s world comprised of wiggling bugs, jumping frogs, and other natural wonders.
Waiting For Wings tells the story an emerging caterpillar in a book-within-book of cut pages tucked into the larger book of a vibrant garden in bloom. Similarly, Planting A Rainbow uses cut pages to illustrate the beauty of each color.
Hands contains cutouts showing the creations possible using your own hands.
Leaf Man is told through color photocopies of leaves Ehlert collected while travelling.
In addition to her collages, an Ehlert trademark is her bold color, such as in Growing Vegetable Soup.
This month we’re reading Lois Ehlert, and we have a great list of authors for the next year– they are some of my favorites, and they cover a fun range of topics. So you can add the authors we will be covering to your library run, I will give you a reminder each month of the upcoming author. I’d love to know if we picked a favorite author of yours.
