Making Sidewalk Chalk is a fun warm-weather activity. And kids love both making it and playing with it!
How to Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint
- Cornstarch (or cornflour)
- Food Coloring (or washable liquid water colors)
- A container
- Something to paint with
Generally we mix the cornstarch and water in a 1:1 proportion. Then we mix it up using the paintbrush. Add a few drops of food coloring, and mix again. That’s it! I help them out with the mixing sometimes – but if it’s too thick for them to stir, we just add more water (they LOVE adding water to anything).
I say generally, because sometimes the kids add a little more water…or a little more cornstarch. It still works – you just want to be able to paint with it without it being too runny or too thick. Although, if it’s runny, then it’s fun to pour, and if it’s thick, you can just add water! There’s pretty much no wrong way to make this recipe!
There are also lots of great recipes for solid sidewalk chalk, even glow in the dark chalk!
Note on using food coloring: this recipe does take a few days/rains to wash out of our driveway. This is generally true for us for all chalk (even store-bought). You can just leave out the food coloring – there’s lots of fun to be had with white paint!
