We love making our own sensory play materials. There are so many great materials out there for sensory play. Sometimes we find it more fun to make up a play recipe for playtime. Today I am sharing how we made our own Peppermint Rainbow Rice. This recipe is easy enough that the kids can help if they want to make it. My oldest helped out to start and then wandered off to play. He said to call him back when it was ready. Once the easy to make sensory rice was ready, they could not wait to get their hands in it.
Peppermint Rainbow Rice
What we used/supplies:
rice
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple food coloring
tip- the gel food coloring gives it a brighter look
water
bowls
Have a tray lined with paper towel ready.
How to make/what we did:
We measured out 6 cups of rice. 1 cup of rice per bowl. I got a smaller glass bowl out and added food coloring and a little water. Just enough to wet the rice but not soak. Start with a few tablespoons of water. Add more if you need it.
Once the food coloring and water were mixed my son poured it in the first bowl of rice. He took a spoon and mixed it up.
Next he added a few drops of the peppermint oil. We, or I after the first 2, did this for each bowl of rice until we had six colors.
The tray with paper towel comes in handy at the end. Pour the rice over onto the tray. Spread it out a little. I leave mine for a day or two until dry. Once dry you are ready to PLAY!
