Getting sticky stuff out of hair – gum, glue, slime – is the pits. These are ways we’ve gotten gum out of hair without resorting to scissors. I’ve given 4 ways I’ve used and two others I haven’t tried yet – but will if I ever have to! And it works for slime, glue, and other generally-sticky kid-related things that get in hair.
Make It Less Sticky
- Lemon Oil. This is my favorite. This is the method I’ve used in all the pictures here.
- Peanut Butter. Use smooth, not crunchy. And with a whole lot of oil!
- Oil (probably the reason the peanut butter works!) – Coconut oil works and I’ve heard olive oil also works well.
For these methods, apply the oil to the hair. For the Lemon Oil I put a few drops onto a paper towel, and then wrap the towel around the gum. For the peanut butter and olive oil I put some on a spoon and then use my fingers to put it around the gum. Olive oil I would pour onto a paper towel and then place on top of the gum.
I let the oil sit for a little, and then get it out either with a fine tooth comb or (what I did here — my fingernails).
Then wash the hair! Actually, using the Lemon Oil I didn’t wash his hair right away and it wasn’t sticky. (we did wash his hair that night)
Make It Harder
- Ice – this is not my favorite method, as you have to ice the hair for a long time, like 20 minutes. With a squirming kid, who may also be anxious about having gum (or slime!) in their hair.
A Few Others To Try
- baking soda paste
Have you used any other ways to remove gum from hair? I’d love to hear!
